Why you shouldn’t stress not having it all together.

Good morning my fellow early birds, my coffee lovers, and my barely making it through the morning individuals.

We’ve all been there.

You know, that feeling when you simply feel off. It feels like you can’t really explain how you’re really feeling but something just doesn’t feel right.

For me, this feeling occurs when I’m trying to find balance in my life. I’m torn between slowing down and settling in somewhere and being in more of a routine; or continuing to work, save, travel and do it all over again.

Half of my friends are married, buying houses and having babies with the love of their lives, and the other half of my friends are in a foreign country hiking volcanos and playing with elephants.

For some of you who are in a routine job at the moment, you probably think I’m crazy for even feeling torn between the two. However, for those of you who just got back from your few months traveling abroad, or who just settled into their third temporary home this year, you probably feel me when I say—this can be a little draining.

Yeah, I have those days when I open my eyes, roll over in bed and feel like I have no idea which way I want to go in life. I can’t get a grip on my career choices, my love life is pretty much nonexistent, the only staple items in my kitchen are pizza rolls and ramen noodles and I haven’t combed my hair in days.

For a while I thought maybe I was just losing my mind, or maybe it’s the planets (my go-to excuse when I can’t blame boys, hormones, or anything else). I’ve been living on the go, pretty much out of bags for the past few months, so maybe I just need to settle in for a bit.

But then I have friends who reach out who are feeling just as wacky as I am. They feel almost like they have no direction; or no idea where life is taking them at the moment. Here’s the thing; I feel you. Heck, we all feel you.

For me, life is a balance of figuring it out on the go, and fake it ‘til you make it somedays. But I think the important thing to remember is that it’s going to work itself out. There will be a sign, there will be that push or pull you feel in one direction or the other that really leads you down the path you are supposed to take.

Don’t stress yourself out feeling like you have to have it all together; (preaching to myself actually). This is the time in your life when you get to figure it out. Someday maybe you’ll look over to your best friend and say, remember that time we tried to open our own coffee shop? But then you realized you actually couldn’t tolerate people in the morning; due to the fact that you yourself are not a morning person. Yeah good times. Anyway, you get my point.

Try new things, fail at them, then try the next thing until you find something that just feels ‘right’. But enjoy the craziness that comes with this whole ‘figuring it out’ stage of life. And when someone asks for the millionth time what you’re doing with your life; explain to them just that: you’re figuring it out.

Every time I’ve told one of my tables that I’m currently moving around working seasonally in search of the perfect place to settle down and find my dream job, nine times out of ten I get the same response; “wow, I really wish I would have done something like that.”

So, use your twenties; as a time to grow, a time to figure out just what the heck you want to do with your life, to try new things and to be in a rut, or two or three or four.

So, you say you’re in a rut—so what? Milk it for a while sweetie, grab that popcorn and snuggle under your blanket and watch sappy movies and get a good cry out for a bit. Be dramatic, I mean like Katharine Hepburn type of dramatic and just soak it in that you have no idea what the heck you’re doing with your life.

But then, sit down; do some self-reflecting; listen to podcasts, read new books, reach out to people in career fields you think you might like, watch YouTube tutorials until your eyes bleed; just kidding. But for real; turn on that kick-ass Spotify playlist that makes you feel like Captain Marvel and jot down some ideas; some new things you want to try. Then get out there and start trying.

As my best friend Emily would say, “the world is your Oyster”. I seriously have no idea what that means but whatever. So, you say you’re in a rut—so what. You’ve got this, we’ve all got this. Have a kickass Friday junior!
